Door & window sensors

Installation

Step 1 - Connect to your panel

Before you install your door & window sensors, you need to connect them to your control panel, so they communicate with your Morepork.

Watch demo:

Connect:

  1. Get your first door & window sensor out of the box and put the transmitter (larger piece) and magnet (the smaller piece) together so the sensor is closed. Make sure the magnet is on the same side of the transmitter as the arrow, and that the two pieces are at the same height.
  2. On your control panel, press home6
  3. Tap settings7 and enter your installer code.
You should have customised this when you installed your control panel, otherwise it will be 9976 by default, we recommend you change this for security purposes.
  4. Tap 'Installation' then 'Security Sensors'
  5. Tap 'Auto Learn Sensor'. This puts your panel into pairing mode for 2 minutes, so it can find your nearby sensors.
  6. Close to the panel, separate the two pieces of your door & window sensors, to replicate opening. Your panel will beep and bring up a pop up, requesting the sensor is added.
  7. Tap 'OK'. You can name your sensors here, or you can do so later via the web portal. You can also customise the delay on your door & window sensors - the default delay is 30 seconds before your alarm is triggered.
  8. Tap 'Add New' to add the sensor to your Morepork panel. Your panel will verbally confirm it has been added.
  9. To test your sensors are installed correctly, close your door & window sensor by putting the two pieces together; making sure the magnet is on the same side of the transmitter as the arrow, and that the two pieces are at the same height.
  10. On your control panel, press home7 then tap 'Status'.
  11. Separate the two pieces, and your panel will say 'Sensor open'. You will also see under 'Status' on your panel, the sensor will change from 'Closed' to 'Open'.
  12. Repeat for all of your door & window sensors.

Step 2 - Attach to your doors & windows

Where to place:

  • Place sensors at main entry points to your home, for example the front and back doors.
  • Think about likely entry points not covered by other sensors (such as image or motion sensors), eg: French doors or ranchsliders, upstairs balcony doors, ground-floor windows and windows easily accessed by climbing.
  • Remember you can add more door & window sensors to your Morepork at any time.
  • Suitable for indoor use only.
  • See ‘Placement Examples’ at the bottom of the page to see install examples.

Install:

  1. The larger piece, the transmitter, should go on the fixed part of the door or window, for example the frame. The smaller magnet should go on the moving part, for example the door itself. If there’s not enough room on the door or window frame, it’s okay to swap these over.
  2. Position each sensor at the top or bottom of a door or window so it’s discreet and out of sight. When the door’s closed, the two pieces should sit 5 to 10mm apart – about the width of a pencil. Make sure the magnet is on the same side of the transmitter as the arrow, and that the two pieces are at the same height.
  3. If your doors or windows aren’t flush and the transmitter and magnet can’t sit side by side, you can install the transmitter and magnet at right angles to each other. See ‘Placement Examples’ at the bottom of the page to see install examples.
  4. Once you’ve decided where the sensor will go, clean the area with the wipes provided and allow it to dry. Then peel off the adhesive backing and press each piece firmly into place. Make sure the door or window is closed while you’re installing the sensor, and that the sensor isn’t in the way of the door or window opening.
  5. Once the sensor is in place, open the door and listen for feedback from the control panel. If it chimes and says ‘Sensor open’, you’ve installed the sensor correctly.
  6. Repeat these steps for your other door & window sensors.

More Information

About your door & window sensors

These sensors monitor whether a door or window is open or closed. Each sensor is made up of two pieces, a transmitter and a smaller magnet, which send a signal to the control panel when separated.

Door & window sensors are small enough to be used on drawers, cupboards, liquor or medicine cabinets, the freezer – anything that opens and closes.

The transmitter is the more sensitive component, so it’s best to install it on the fixed part of the door or window where there’ll be less rattling around.

Standard doors:

If your doors sit flush, install the transmitter on the door frame and the magnet on the door itself.

standarddoor1

If you prefer, you can install the sensor horizontally at the top of the door.

French or bi-fold doors:

On French or bi-fold doors where one section has to be opened first, you can install the sensor at the top of the door. First place the magnet on the door, as close to the top as possible. Then place the transmitter on the door frame, facing down toward the floor.

bifold1

Where either door can be opened first, you can install the magnet on one door (the one you open most) and the transmitter on the other. This allows you to monitor both doors with one sensor.

Recessed doors:

If the transmitter fits on the door frame, install it there and place the magnet on the moving door. It’s okay for the pieces to sit at right angles, as long as the magnet is on the same side of the transmitter as the arrow.

If the transmitter doesn’t fit on the door frame, install it on the moving door and place the magnet on the frame. Make sure the magnet is on the same side of the transmitter as the arrow.

If you still can’t get the transmitter and magnet to sit side by side, use the foam blocks provided to bring them level.

Standard windows:

Install the magnet on the moving part of the window as close to the frame as possible. Then place the transmitter on the frame.

Where either window can be opened first, you can install the magnet on one window (the one you open most) and the transmitter on the other. This allows you to monitor both windows with one sensor.

Sash windows:

Install the magnet on the moving part of the window as close to the frame as possible. Then place the transmitter on the frame. It’s okay for them to be at right angles, as long as the magnet is on the same side of the transmitter as the arrow.

If you prefer, you can install the sensor horizontally. Place the transmitter flat on the window sill, not too close to the window itself. Place the magnet on the moving part of the window.
